Gael Monfils received an emotional send-off at Roland Garros on Thursday as he teamed up with his wife Elina Svitolina in a special exhibition event ahead of his final appearance at the French Open.
The event, titled “Gael & Friends,” transformed Court Philippe-Chatrier into a celebration of Monfils’ career, combining tennis, entertainment and tributes to the Frenchman’s impact on the sport over the past two decades.
Several leading stars joined the occasion, including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The exhibition also featured Naomi Osaka, Maria Sakkari and young American player Iva Jovic.
Former French teammates Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet added a nostalgic atmosphere as fans celebrated Monfils’ memorable career and enduring popularity.
Monfils and Svitolina eventually won the exhibition match in front of an enthusiastic Paris crowd. The evening featured trick shots, light-hearted exchanges and emotional tributes rather than the pressure of traditional competition.
Throughout his career, Monfils captured 13 ATP titles and reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2008. He also represented France in two Davis Cup finals and became known worldwide for his athletic style and charismatic personality on court.
Addressing the crowd after the match, Monfils reflected on his journey, saying he had always given everything to the sport even though he never managed to win a Grand Slam title. He added that he remains proud of the career and memories he created.
Svitolina became emotional during the ceremony as Monfils remained on court to absorb the applause from supporters. The 39-year-old will now prepare for one final Roland Garros campaign, beginning with a first-round match against fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston next week.
