Fritz Edges Vacherot in Basel as Sinner Shines on Vienna Return

Posted : 23 October 2025
Taylor Fritz survived a tough first-round test against Valentin Vacherot at the Swiss Indoors, while Jannik Sinner marked his return from injury with a dominant win.

Taylor Fritz booked his place in the second round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel after a hard-fought three-set victory over Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot.

The American top seed battled back from a set down to win 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5, showcasing his resilience in a match that tested his composure and consistency.

Valentin Vacherot entered the tournament on a high after his historic triumph in Shanghai, where he became the lowest-ranked player to ever win an ATP 1000 title. His remarkable success saw him surge 165 places in the world rankings, climbing from 204th to 39th.

The Monegasque player carried that confidence into Basel, determined to extend his winning run against one of the tour’s top competitors.

The opening set went Vacherot’s way as he broke Fritz twice to seize control, but the American rallied impressively in the second. Fritz showed his experience under pressure, saving several set points before forcing a decisive tiebreak, which he claimed to level the contest.

In the final set, both players traded breaks before Vacherot’s resistance faded in the 12th game, allowing Fritz to close out the match and move into the round of 16, where he will face Ugo Humbert of France.

Meanwhile, in Vienna, Jannik Sinner made a dominant return to action with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the first round of the Vienna Open.

The world No. 2, competing for the first time since his withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters, completed the victory in just 58 minutes—his fastest match of the year.

Sinner, who has already claimed three titles this season, will face compatriot Flavio Cobolli next as he continues his pursuit of a fourth.

Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev extended his fine form with a three-set win over Nuno Borges, prevailing 6-4, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2.

The former world No. 1, who recently ended a two-year title drought by winning in Almaty, maintained his momentum with another confident display. His victory underlined his return to form as the tour’s late-season events continue to shape the year-end race.
