Swiatek Stunned at French Open as Zverev, Fonseca and Kostyuk Advance to Quarterfinals

Posted : 01 June 2026

Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek endured a disappointing exit from Roland Garros on Sunday as the tournament’s top seeds continued to fall during the opening matches of the second week. The Polish third seed was defeated 7-5, 6-1 by Marta Kostyuk, bringing an abrupt end to her campaign on her 25th birthday.

Swiatek, who has dominated on the Paris clay in recent years, has recently struggled to maintain her usual consistency at the top level. After previously enjoying a strong run of success at Roland Garros, her form on clay has become less dominant, with fewer titles in the past two seasons compared to earlier in her career.

In the match, Swiatek briefly led after securing a break in the first set, but her rhythm quickly faded. Her serve broke down under pressure as Kostyuk fought back to take the opening set and then controlled the second to seal a convincing victory.

The Ukrainian’s win marks her first-ever quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros, continuing an impressive clay-court season that has already included titles in Rouen and Madrid. She will now face fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who came from behind to defeat Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Svitolina, who recently won a WTA 1000 title in Rome, praised Kostyuk’s form and said their upcoming clash would be a major moment for Ukrainian tennis, with a place in the semifinals at stake.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, Sorana Cirstea continued her strong farewell season by defeating Wang Xiyu 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). The 36-year-old Romanian reached her first French Open quarterfinal in 17 years and will next meet eighth seed Mirra Andreeva, who advanced with a straight-sets win over Jil Teichmann.

In the men’s competition, Germany’s Alexander Zverev moved into the quarterfinals with a composed 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jesper de Jong. The second seed has yet to drop a set in the tournament and remains one of the leading contenders, though he declined to discuss expectations of winning a maiden Grand Slam title.

Meanwhile, rising Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca continued his breakthrough run by defeating former finalist Casper Ruud in a thrilling four-set encounter. Fonseca produced 51 winners in a 7-5, 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-2 win and will now face Czech player Jakub Mensik in a battle between first-time Grand Slam quarterfinalists.

As the French Open moves deeper into the second week, unexpected results and emerging talents continue to reshape both draws, setting up an intriguing path toward the semifinals.
