American world number 26 Frances Tiafoe produced a commanding performance to win the ATP Halle tournament on Sunday, defeating compatriot and world number nine Taylor Fritz in the final of the Wimbledon warm-up event.
Tiafoe secured a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-4, relying heavily on his powerful serve to dominate proceedings. The 28-year-old lost just seven points on his serve throughout the match and wrapped up the contest in one hour and seven minutes.
The triumph marks the fourth title of Tiafoe’s career and his first since 2023, as well as his maiden ATP 500-level trophy. The victory comes just days before Wimbledon, which begins on June 29.
Unseeded at the tournament, Tiafoe delivered an impressive run to the title, defeating three top-10 opponents along the way. His path included wins over world number 10 Flavio Cobolli, world number four Felix Auger-Aliassime, and finally Fritz in the championship match.
The victory also ended a long losing streak against Fritz, with Tiafoe having lost seven consecutive matches to his fellow American since 2016, including the 2024 US Open final.
For Fritz, the defeat marked a difficult week on grass. The 28-year-old, known for his strong performances on the surface, had never previously lost a grass-court final before suffering back-to-back defeats in finals within a week. He had also fallen to fellow American Ben Shelton in the Stuttgart final the previous Sunday.
Fritz reached the Halle final after an impressive comeback win over newly crowned French Open champion Alexander Zverev, recovering from a set down to win in three sets.
Tiafoe, meanwhile, advanced to the final with a comfortable straight-sets win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, losing just four games in that match.
The victory gives Tiafoe strong momentum heading into Wimbledon, while Fritz will look to regroup after a rare dip in form on grass.
