Frances Tiafoe produced a superb performance at the US Open on Sunday, defeating former champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals. The 11th-seeded American prevailed 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) over the seventh seed, securing his fourth quarterfinal appearance at Flushing Meadows.
Medvedev held the advantage at several crucial stages but was unable to convert his opportunities as Tiafoe raised his level when it mattered most. The American overturned a 6-5 deficit in the opening set before dominating the tiebreak, then recovered from another setback in the third-set tiebreak to close out the match.
The victory was particularly impressive given Medvedev's previous dominance in their rivalry. The Russian had won six of their previous seven meetings, but Tiafoe finally turned the tables in front of a passionate Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd, where he remains unbeaten in 10 appearances.
Tiafoe will now face fellow American Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old Michelsen reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal after defeating Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4, and he has yet to drop a set at this year's tournament.
The all-American clash gives the United States another strong opportunity to reach the semifinals at home, with Tiafoe looking to repeat the deep runs that took him to the last four in 2022 and 2024. A victory over Michelsen would put him one match away from another US Open final appearance.
