Frances Tiafoe Stuns Alex Michelsen to Reach US Open Semifinals

Frances Tiafoe produced a stunning comeback at the US Open on Tuesday, overcoming fellow American Alex Michelsen in five sets to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows for the third time in five years.

The 11th-seeded Tiafoe eventually prevailed 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) after four hours and 38 minutes of gripping tennis.

Michelsen, ranked 46th in the world, appeared to be in control after taking the opening two sets and establishing a 3-0 advantage in the deciding set. The 22-year-old had also been unbeaten in sets throughout his run to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

However, Tiafoe refused to surrender. Michelsen had the opportunity to serve for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but two costly double faults allowed Tiafoe back into the contest.

The more experienced American capitalised on the opening, taking the third set before forcing a deciding set. Even after Michelsen broke early in the fifth, Tiafoe continued to fight and eventually sent the match into a 10-point tiebreak.

Tiafoe held his nerve when it mattered most, sealing victory with a forehand winner. Michelsen was visibly emotional at the net after the heartbreaking defeat.

Tiafoe admitted he had struggled to find his rhythm early in the contest, but said the atmosphere inside Arthur Ashe Stadium improved as his performance gathered momentum.

The victory sends Tiafoe into another US Open semifinal, where he will face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or fellow American Ben Shelton.

“It feels amazing to get this done,” Tiafoe said after another memorable night in New York.
