Frances Tiafoe Proud of US Open Run Despite Semifinal Defeat

Frances Tiafoe's latest US Open campaign ended in disappointment as the American fell to compatriot Ben Shelton in four sets in Friday's semifinal. Shelton recovered from losing the opening set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 and book his place in his first Grand Slam final.

Despite the defeat, Tiafoe received a standing ovation from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd as he left the court. The 28-year-old had reached the last four at Flushing Meadows for the third time in five years, but once again fell short of a first Grand Slam final.

Tiafoe said he was disappointed with the result but remained encouraged by the progress he has made throughout the season. He entered the US Open after winning the grass-court title in Halle and reaching the Cincinnati Masters final, while his run in New York included a dramatic five-set comeback against Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals.

The American admitted that Shelton's powerful serving created a major challenge. Shelton finished the semifinal with 20 aces and a high first-serve percentage, making it difficult for Tiafoe to create consistent pressure on his opponent's service games.

Tiafoe also believes his own serve is an area that needs improvement as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam championship. He acknowledged that having to work hard to protect his service games left him with fewer opportunities to attack Shelton.

The US Open run nevertheless represents a significant step forward after Tiafoe struggled at the tournament last year. His performance in New York is expected to lift him to a career-high world ranking of No. 8, marking his return to the top 10 for the first time since 2023.

Tiafoe now plans to use the disappointment as motivation for the remainder of the season. With a Grand Slam title still his ultimate target, the American intends to return to work and give himself another opportunity to compete for one of tennis's biggest prizes.
