Flavio Cobolli has withdrawn from the Paris Masters because of a muscle injury, creating uncertainty around his hopes of making his first appearance at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.
The Italian had been determined to recover in time for the final Masters 1000 tournament of the season after retiring from his second-round match at the Vienna Open last week. Cobolli was visibly emotional as he left the court after suffering a muscle strain during his encounter with compatriot Matteo Berrettini.
Despite the setback, the French Open runner-up travelled to Paris hoping to regain his fitness and continue his pursuit of an ATP Finals place. However, after experiencing further discomfort during training, he decided against competing rather than risk aggravating the injury.
Cobolli explained that he had hoped to participate but was still experiencing pain and did not want to take unnecessary risks. He has now shifted his attention towards recovering ahead of the remaining commitments of the season.
The withdrawal leaves his qualification hopes largely dependent on the performances of his rivals. Cobolli currently sits sixth in the ATP Race to Turin, effectively occupying fifth position among active contenders following Jannik Sinner's withdrawal from the ATP Finals because of a knee injury.
Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev have already secured their places in the season-ending competition, leaving four positions still available.
Arthur Fils, Frances Tiafoe and Rafael Jodar are among those chasing qualification, while Alex de Minaur, Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz also remain in contention.
Cobolli will retain the ranking points he has accumulated throughout the season, but his absence from Paris means he cannot strengthen his position. According to the latest qualification calculations, he would miss out only if four other players overtake him during the tournament.
The Italian will therefore be hoping his existing points advantage proves sufficient to secure a maiden appearance at the ATP Finals in front of his home supporters in Turin.
