Fabio Fognini Announces Retirement from Italian Open After 18 Appearances

Posted : 08 May 2025

Fabio Fognini, the former world number nine, has announced that this year's Italian Open in Rome will be his final appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event. The 37-year-old Italian, who will face Briton Jacob Fearnley in the first round on Thursday, is making his 18th main draw appearance at the tournament, having reached the quarterfinals in 2018.

Fognini reflected on his career, saying it feels like the right time to say goodbye in Rome, a city that has held special meaning for him since childhood.

Fognini first competed at the Italian Open in 2006 and has since built a strong connection with the tournament, despite the challenges he faced throughout his career. Speaking to the Tennis Channel, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play in Rome one last time, noting the ups and downs he experienced over the years. "I'm here with a smile on my face," he said, acknowledging the emotional significance of his final appearance in the city.

Known for his success on clay, Fognini has won eight of his nine ATP singles titles on the surface, including the prestigious 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. One of his fondest memories in Rome was his straight-set victory over then world number one Andy Murray in 2017.

As he wraps up his career, Fognini aims to enjoy his final moments at the tournament, reflecting on a journey that began with dreams of playing there as a young boy.
