Emma Raducanu Withdraws From Wimbledon After Suffering Stress Fracture

Posted : 29 June 2026

Emma Raducanu has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon after medical scans confirmed a stress fracture in her lower right leg, ending the British number one's hopes of competing at her home Grand Slam.

The 23-year-old, seeded 30th for this year's tournament, had been scheduled to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the opening round on Monday. However, further medical assessments determined that the injury she had been managing had worsened, leaving her unable to take to the court.

Raducanu revealed that she had made every effort to be fit for the tournament but accepted medical advice after the latest scan confirmed the severity of the problem.

"I've done everything possible to try to get to the start line, but after a final scan tonight the niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture," she said.

The 2021 US Open champion added that doctors had advised her to stop playing in order to avoid making the injury worse.

The withdrawal is a major disappointment for British tennis fans, who had hoped Raducanu could produce another strong run on home soil after showing encouraging form earlier in the grass-court season.

Her injury concerns had been growing in recent weeks. Raducanu had not played a competitive match since finishing runner-up at the Queen's Club tournament on June 14 after losing the final to Donna Vekic.

The lower-leg issue first emerged toward the end of the clay-court season and became more troublesome during her demanding run at Queen's, where she played five matches after returning from a lengthy spell without competition.

Signs of the injury became increasingly apparent in the days leading up to Wimbledon. Raducanu was seen wearing a protective boot last week, missed training sessions on Thursday and Friday, and cut short a practice session on Saturday, raising doubts over her participation.

Despite those concerns, she had remained optimistic about playing. On Sunday, Raducanu completed a brief practice session and said she and her medical team were doing everything possible to prepare her for the opening round.

She explained that the focus had been on managing the injury through treatment while exploring every available option to keep her fit for the tournament. Ultimately, however, the stress fracture ruled her out.

Raducanu's latest setback continues a difficult period marked by recurring fitness problems. Earlier this season, she was sidelined for several weeks after contracting a viral illness, adding to a series of injuries that have interrupted her progress since her remarkable US Open triumph as a teenage qualifier in 2021.

Her withdrawal leaves Wimbledon without Britain's top-ranked female player and delays another attempt to rebuild momentum after an injury-hit start to the season.
