Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Auckland WTA Event Due to Back Issue

Posted : 31 December 2024

Emma Raducanu has been forced to withdraw from this week's WTA event in Auckland due to a back issue. The 22-year-old was set to face Robin Montgomery of the United States in the first round of the ASB Classic on Tuesday but has now decided to focus on her preparations for the Australian Open.

Raducanu expressed disappointment, saying she had tried her best to be ready for the tournament but was unable to recover in time.

The British tennis star will now head to Melbourne to continue her training ahead of the Australian Open, which begins on January 12. Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open, has been dealing with injuries over the past year, including a sprained foot ligament in September, which limited her to only three matches for the rest of the season.

Despite this, she managed to win all three matches representing Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, but she will enter the Australian Open without any recent match play.

Last season, Raducanu dealt with fewer injuries but played only 10 matches after Wimbledon. She also missed the Miami Open in March due to another back issue. To improve her fitness, Raducanu has hired renowned trainer Yutaka Nakamura, who has been working with her in Auckland.

She recently shared that this partnership would offer a more tailored approach to her training and that she was excited to see how it would enhance her game on the court.

Currently ranked 56th in the world, Raducanu will not be seeded for the upcoming Australian Open. However, her new fitness regime and dedicated coaching staff are expected to help her improve as she moves into the first Grand Slam of the season.
