Emma Raducanu targets Strasbourg return after Italian Open withdrawal

Posted : 07 May 2026

Emma Raducanu is aiming to return to competitive action at the WTA Strasbourg event in two weeks after withdrawing from the Italian Open due to ongoing health issues.

The British number one stepped out of the Rome tournament at short notice, citing lingering effects from a post-viral illness that has disrupted her season since March. Raducanu has spent several weeks recovering and admits the illness significantly affected her physical condition.

Her planned return in Strasbourg is not yet guaranteed, as she will require a wildcard entry after missing the official registration deadline. She previously competed at the event last year, where she recorded a notable win over top-20 player Daria Kasatkina before falling to Danielle Collins.

Raducanu had been hopeful of building momentum ahead of the French Open, but her withdrawal means she is now unlikely to be seeded if she returns in time for the Grand Slam.

Before pulling out of Rome, the 23-year-old explained that she had endured around six weeks of limited training while recovering from illness, describing the physical toll as significant.

The Strasbourg tournament, scheduled to begin on 17 May, is yet to confirm whether she will be granted a wildcard to compete.

Elsewhere on the British tennis circuit, Katie Boulter suffered an early exit at the Rome Masters, losing a tight three-set match to Eva Lys despite a brief fightback in the second set. Boulter also exited early in Madrid last week, continuing a difficult run on the clay swing.
