Emma Raducanu Reflects on Singapore Open Exit, Stays Positive

Posted : 28 January 2025

Emma Raducanu remained optimistic despite her first-round exit at the Singapore Open, where she fell 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 to world number 101 Cristina Bucsa. The British seventh seed faced a grueling three-hour and three-minute match against her Spanish opponent, marking a challenging return to the court following her third-round finish at the Australian Open. At Melbourne, Raducanu had reached the tournament's latter stages for the first time in her career before losing to second-seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

Since her stunning 2021 US Open victory, Raducanu has struggled with injuries and changes in her coaching team. She recently parted ways with coach Nick Cavaday, who stepped back for health reasons. Reflecting on her match in Singapore, the 22-year-old expressed pride in her ability to adapt, crediting her fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura and her mother for their support during the tournament. She highlighted the importance of match experience, especially in the early stages of the season, and viewed the intense match as a valuable opportunity for growth.

Raducanu acknowledged the positives despite the loss, emphasizing her commitment to improvement and resilience. “I fought really hard. I gave everything. For me, it’s all about building and moving forward,” she told ESPN. She added that spending over three hours in a competitive match was beneficial for her development, reinforcing her determination to regain her best form as the season progresses.
