Emma Raducanu prioritizes game development over tournament results in 2024

Posted : 06 March 2024

Emma Raducanu is prioritizing the development of her game over tournament results this year, emphasizing the importance of enhancing her tennis skills.

The 21-year-old, who has won three matches in the four tournaments played since returning from an eight-month injury hiatus, expresses a focus on becoming a better player rather than solely accumulating match experience.

Ahead of her first-round match against qualifier Rebeka Masarova at Indian Wells, Raducanu shares her commitment to working on her game and skills development, highlighting the necessity of taking time for this process rather than following conventional approaches.

Acknowledging that some may emphasize the need for more matches, Raducanu remains steadfast in her approach, emphasizing her desire to avoid simply "following the crowd" and playing numerous matches. Instead, she aims to dedicate time to refining her game, steering clear of dropping down to Challenger level solely for match exposure.

Reflecting on her journey and acknowledging the uncertainty after an eight-month absence, Raducanu underscores the importance of a balanced approach, especially after experiencing fatigue from a busy schedule since December.

Recalling her strong performance in Indian Wells in 2023, where she reached the fourth round despite the looming prospect of wrist surgery, Raducanu views her current journey as a process with unexpected twists. She values the opportunity to refresh and practice for the American swing, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming challenges.

Additionally, she mentions the likelihood of participating in Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tie in France in April, contingent on selection by captain Anne Keothavong, considering the timing before the WTA tournament in Stuttgart on indoor clay.
