Emma Raducanu made her return to competitive tennis in Strasbourg but suffered a narrow first-round defeat to France’s Diane Parry, marking a difficult comeback after more than two months away from the WTA Tour. The British number one had been sidelined due to a post-viral illness and was playing her first match since March.
Returning on a wildcard entry into the WTA 500 event, Raducanu showed early promise but ultimately fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in a closely contested match lasting over two hours. The defeat comes just days before the French Open, giving her limited preparation on clay ahead of the season’s second Grand Slam.
Raducanu began strongly, breaking early in the first set with aggressive baseline play and confident shot-making. However, unforced errors and double faults began to disrupt her rhythm, allowing Parry to fight back and take control of key moments in the match.
The second set proved even more competitive, with Raducanu saving multiple break points and forcing a tie-break after a tense exchange of service breaks. Despite her resilience, Parry held her nerve to close out the victory and advance to the next round.
Although the result is a setback, there were positives for Raducanu, who appeared physically comfortable and showed strong defensive resilience under pressure. She also benefited from the guidance of coach Andrew Richardson in the stands, marking their renewed partnership since her US Open triumph.
