Emma Raducanu described returning to the court after over two months away as an “alien” experience, but said her three-set clash with Maria Sakkari at the United Cup on Tuesday has boosted her confidence. The 23-year-old’s performance showed that she can gradually increase her workload in practice despite a recent foot injury.
Raducanu had withdrawn from her scheduled match against Naomi Osaka on Sunday due to the injury she sustained late last year, but managed to compete against Greece’s Sakkari in Perth. The British star lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, ending Britain’s run in the mixed-team event, but remained positive about her comeback.
“I am pretty happy with how I was able to play a match of three sets,” Raducanu told reporters. “Considering I played only five or six games in practice, it’s a big effort for me.” She acknowledged that the match was challenging but saw it as a step forward in regaining her match fitness.
Raducanu has faced a difficult period since her breakthrough US Open victory in 2021, with injuries and inconsistent form affecting her progress. She reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Open last year before cutting her season short. Reflecting on her time away, she said: “It’s been a good two and a bit months where I didn’t play. It’s been difficult to increase the load and deal with the unpredictability of tennis. Today, being able to produce that, having not played, gives me confidence for when I do practice more.”
She admitted that the first set felt unusual: “Initially, you feel a little bit alien on the court, just playing points again. I know now I just need to get my head down and keep working.”
Raducanu is scheduled to return to competitive action at the Hobart International, starting January 12, ahead of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, which begins on January 18.
