Emma Raducanu Faces Early Exit at Singapore Open

Posted : 28 January 2025

Emma Raducanu's return to tennis ended in disappointment as she was defeated by world number 101 Cristina Bucsa in the opening round of the Singapore Open. This match marked Raducanu's first since her heavy loss to Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open, and the news of her coach Nick Cavaday stepping back for health reasons added extra tension to the encounter. The match was a gruelling three-hour battle with 17 breaks of service, where Bucsa ultimately triumphed 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

Raducanu initially took control of the match after coming from behind in the first set, breaking Bucsa's serve when the Spaniard served for the set at 5-4. However, the second set saw both players struggle with their serves, and despite Raducanu's efforts to recover after being down 4-2, Bucsa closed out the set after a series of critical breaks. Raducanu, though battling valiantly, could not sustain her lead in the final set, where Bucsa broke at a crucial moment and sealed the victory.

The British number two fought hard in the decider, holding her ground to take a 5-4 lead, but Bucsa, an Olympic women’s doubles bronze medallist, was unrelenting. Despite saving two match points, Raducanu's opponent broke again, clinching the match with a netted shot from Raducanu. Bucsa will now face either Sijia Wei of China or Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand in the next round.

In other news, British number five Jodie Burrage also suffered an early exit, losing to Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the second round of qualifying at the Linz Open in Austria. Burrage, who had a strong showing at the Australian Open, fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) despite defeating Lola Radivojevic in the first round.
