Britain’s Emma Raducanu suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of sixth seed Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the Indian Wells tournament, losing 6-1, 6-1 in just 52 minutes.
Raducanu’s challenges were evident from the start, as she was broken in the opening game. The 25th seed struggled to counter Anisimova’s aggressive and determined play, winning only 11 points in the first set. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Raducanu falling three games behind before holding her serve, but ultimately conceding the set and match.
Having recently parted ways with coach Francisco Roig, Raducanu enlisted Mark Petchey as a temporary coach in January. She had expressed hope of rediscovering her "natural way of playing" to rebuild the form that led her to the 2021 US Open title. However, Anisimova’s confident performance left little room for Raducanu to recover.
This loss marked a sharp contrast to Raducanu’s second-round showing, where she defeated Russian Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 6-3. Speaking on court after the match, Anisimova said her focus had been on enjoying the game and playing fearlessly, a mindset that helped her secure a convincing victory.
