British number one Emma Raducanu produced an impressive display to defeat Anna Blinkova in straight sets at Queen’s Club, describing the result as an important boost in her preparations for Wimbledon.
Raducanu secured a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory over the Russian qualifier, claiming her first match win since March. The 23-year-old made a blistering start, winning the opening eight games of the contest and rarely allowing her opponent an opportunity to settle into the match.
The former US Open champion has endured a challenging period in recent months. A post-viral illness forced her to spend more than two months away from the WTA Tour, disrupting her season and limiting her match practice. Upon returning to competition, she suffered first-round defeats in Strasbourg and at the French Open, raising questions about her form heading into the grass-court season.
However, Raducanu looked revitalized in front of a home crowd in London. Speaking after the match, she expressed her delight at returning to winning ways and thanked supporters for their encouragement. She said there was no venue where she would rather have earned her first victory in months.
The Briton appeared far more relaxed and confident than during her recent appearances. Her positive body language was evident throughout the match as she engaged with the crowd, celebrated key points, and moved freely around the court. Raducanu later explained that she felt comfortable and clear-minded, allowing her to play naturally without overthinking her performance.
A brief rain interruption early in the match did little to disrupt her momentum. After play resumed, Raducanu continued to dominate, capturing the opening set in just 20 minutes. She struck 11 winners while committing only two unforced errors, showcasing the aggressive and controlled tennis that helped her rise to prominence.
The second set proved more competitive as a series of service breaks allowed Blinkova to draw level at 3-3. Nevertheless, Raducanu quickly regained control, securing another break before confidently serving out the match. A backhand winner down the line on her second match point sealed the victory and drew a loud ovation from the crowd.
After the match, Raducanu wrote “back home” alongside a heart on a television camera lens, highlighting her appreciation for competing in front of British fans. She will next face Romanian seventh seed Sorana Cîrstea in the second round as she continues her Wimbledon build-up.
