Emma Navarro has announced that she will end her 2026 tennis season early as she continues to address health problems that have affected her for nearly three years. The 25-year-old American, currently ranked No. 24 in the world, said she is targeting a return at the 2027 Australian Open.
Navarro revealed in an emotional social media post that she was diagnosed with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. She said the conditions had contributed to symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, headaches and difficulties with concentration while she continued competing on the demanding WTA schedule.
The American said her problems began around 2023, when she was competing extensively and struggling with increasing hunger and a weakened immune system. She continued to achieve significant results despite feeling unwell, including reaching a career-high world ranking of eighth in 2024 and making the US Open semi-finals that year.
Navarro explained that her condition was eventually identified after consultations with doctors, nutritionists and other specialists in November 2025. She said she had been under-fuelling for several years and subsequently began changing her diet and increasing her energy intake as part of her recovery.
Despite the difficulties, Navarro produced several notable results during 2026. She won the Strasbourg title in May and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in September, where she lost to fellow American Jessica Pegula.
Navarro said her health had gradually improved as she made changes to her nutrition and treatment. She also addressed the physical changes that accompanied her recovery, emphasizing that restoring her energy and quality of life was more important than maintaining a particular body shape.
She will now use the remainder of 2026 to continue working with her medical team on medication and nutrition protocols before attempting to return to competition in Australia next year.
