Elina Svitolina Defeats Coco Gauff to Win Third Italian Open Title

Posted : 18 May 2026

Elina Svitolina captured her third Italian Open title on Saturday after defeating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2 in a dramatic final in Rome.

The victory marked Svitolina’s first WTA 1000 triumph since her previous success at the Foro Italico eight years ago and the 20th title of her professional career. The Ukrainian delivered another composed display to continue an impressive run against some of the world’s best players.

On her way to the trophy, Svitolina recorded consecutive wins over top-ranked opponents including Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, strengthening her momentum ahead of the upcoming French Open.

After the match, Svitolina said the title provided a major confidence boost heading into Roland Garros. She praised the intensity and consistency she had shown throughout the tournament against elite competition.

Gauff entered the final hoping to become the first American woman to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 2016, but recurring serving issues proved costly during key moments of the match.

The American struggled in the opening set, where multiple double faults contributed to three service breaks. Frustration became visible late in the set after an errant second serve landed on the wrong side of the court before another double fault handed Svitolina the advantage.

Gauff responded strongly in the second set after a discussion with her coach Jean-Christophe Faurel, improving her serve and battling through several entertaining rallies before winning the tie-break.

However, Svitolina regained control in the deciding set by breaking serve twice more to secure the title and deny Gauff her first tournament win of the season.

Despite the defeat, Gauff said the tournament had provided valuable preparation ahead of her French Open title defence, explaining that she experienced a range of difficult situations that could help her mentally heading into the next Grand Slam.
