Elena Rybakina Wins First US Open Title

Posted : 13 September 2026

Elena Rybakina completed a remarkable turnaround at the 2026 US Open, defeating two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6–4, 5–7, 6–2 in the final to claim her first title at Flushing Meadows and become the new world No. 1.

The victory gave the Kazakhstan representative her third Grand Slam title. She had already beaten Sabalenka in the Australian Open final earlier this year, adding another major triumph to her Wimbledon title from 2022.

Rybakina had secured the top ranking by reaching the semi-finals, but she went on to complete the tournament with the biggest prize of all. Her victory ended Sabalenka’s 20-match winning streak at the US Open and prevented the Belarusian from securing a third consecutive title.

Her success was particularly impressive given the uncertainty surrounding her participation in New York. Rybakina was forced to retire from her Cincinnati quarter-final on August 20 after suffering a left heel and ankle injury, leaving her unable to put weight on the affected foot just days before the US Open.

After arriving in New York, medical examinations raised further concerns, prompting Rybakina and her team to carefully manage her training, recovery and treatment. Despite those difficulties, she remained in the tournament and produced a series of impressive performances.

The Kazakh defeated two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka in the fourth round before overcoming Zheng Qinwen and former champion Coco Gauff in the following rounds. Her victory over Gauff also ended the American's 11-match winning streak.

The final against Sabalenka was the latest chapter in one of the WTA Tour's most competitive rivalries. Rybakina held her nerve in the deciding set after Sabalenka fought back to level the match, eventually pulling away to secure the championship and the world No. 1 ranking.

Rybakina said she had not expected such a successful tournament given the injury problems she faced before arriving in New York. She now enters the next phase of her career at the top of the rankings, with Sabalenka, Gauff and Jessica Pegula among the players capable of challenging her for the position.
