Elena Rybakina Sets Up Blockbuster Miami Open Semifinal Clash with Aryna Sabalenka

Posted : 26 March 2026

The 2026 Miami Open is set for a heavyweight showdown as Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday. Third-seeded Rybakina overcame a difficult start to eliminate American favorite Jessica Pegula with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. The win marks Rybakina’s fifth consecutive triumph over Pegula and keeps her hopes alive for a first Miami title after finishing as runner-up in the previous two years.

Rybakina struggled initially at Hard Rock Stadium, falling behind 4-0 as Pegula dominated the opening set. However, the reigning Australian Open champion found her rhythm in the second set, utilizing her powerful serve to level the match. Rybakina finished the contest with 12 aces and proved clinical in high-pressure moments, saving 8 of 10 break points throughout the two-hour and 15-minute battle.

On the other side of the bracket, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka continued her march toward a potential "Sunshine Double." The world number one defeated unseeded American Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-4 in a composed 80-minute performance. Sabalenka capitalized on Baptiste’s late-set nerves, breaking at 5-4 in both sets to seal her spot in the final four. This victory extends Sabalenka’s dominant run in 2026, which already includes titles in Brisbane and Indian Wells.

The upcoming semifinal will be the 17th meeting between the two power hitters. Sabalenka currently leads their head-to-head series 9-7, including a thrilling victory in the Indian Wells final just two weeks ago. However, Rybakina holds the edge in their most recent Grand Slam encounter, having defeated the Belarusian to claim the Australian Open crown in January. Sabalenka noted in her post-match interview that matches against Rybakina "always push each other to the limit."

The other semifinal will feature an equally intriguing matchup between fourth seed Coco Gauff and 13th seed Karolina Muchova. Gauff leads their head-to-head 5-0, including a three-set victory in Melbourne earlier this year. Muchova enters the contest in peak physical form, having not dropped a set during her run in Miami, while Gauff has battled through four consecutive three-set matches to reach this stage.

As the tournament reaches its climax, the ranking implications are significant. Reaching the final could see shifts at the top of the WTA standings, especially with Sabalenka defending a massive amount of points from her 2025 title run. Fans can expect a night of high-intensity tennis as the four best-performing players of the fortnight compete for a spot in Saturday's championship match.
