Elena Rybakina, ranked world number seven, expressed her disappointment with the WTA’s decision to uphold the ban on her former coach, Stefano Vukov, following an independent investigation into his behavior towards her. In January, the Croatian coach was provisionally suspended for allegedly violating the WTA's Code of Conduct, and the governing body confirmed on Tuesday that the suspension would remain in place.
Rybakina, who had been working with Vukov for five years, stated that she was disappointed with both the situation and the process, but she chose not to comment further after her victory over Rebecca Sramkova at the Qatar Open.
The 25-year-old Russian acknowledged the difficult circumstances, emphasizing that she is focused on her performance on the court and not on off-court matters. Rybakina, who won Wimbledon in 2022 under Vukov's guidance, noted that the situation is not ideal, but she remains determined to perform to the best of her abilities. Despite the personal challenges, her primary focus is on her matches, and she is working to ensure her mental approach remains centered on her game.
While the WTA has not disclosed the duration of Vukov's ban or the specific details of his conduct violation, the investigation centered around the way he communicated with Rybakina both on and off the court.
The pair’s coaching relationship ended just days before the 2024 US Open, and Rybakina had hoped to bring Vukov back into her team at the start of the year. However, with the WTA's decision, that plan is no longer possible.
Vukov, who denies any wrongdoing, has firmly stated that he never abused anyone and has expressed his intent to appeal the WTA’s ruling. He reiterated his stance to The Athletic last month and pointed out that Rybakina had never filed complaints about him. Following the split, Rybakina briefly worked with Novak Djokovic’s former coach Goran Ivanisevic, but their collaboration ended after a fourth-round exit at the Australian Open.
