Elena Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, expressed confidence in her new partnership with Goran Ivanisevic, Novak Djokovic's former coach, ahead of the mixed-teams United Cup. The World No. 6 completed a training block in Dubai with Ivanisevic before joining her Kazakhstan teammates for the Perth leg of the 18-nation tournament, which kicks off the 2025 season. Kazakhstan will face Spain in their opening tie, with Rybakina the favorite to defeat 54th-ranked Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Rybakina, who reached the 2023 Australian Open final, shared that while she had only a few weeks of preparation with Ivanisevic, the collaboration has been beneficial. She described Ivanisevic as "a fun guy" and noted that she’s already learning from his experience as a former player, especially in how he used to prepare. The 25-year-old is optimistic about her physical form and hopes to perform well after a challenging 2024, which included injuries that sidelined her for part of the season.
This marks Rybakina's first time competing in a team event, and she’s excited about the experience. The entire Kazakhstan squad is making their United Cup debut, having bonded over a Christmas dinner, and they are eager to get started. Rybakina is particularly excited about facing top players and feels that the team has good chances in the competition. Meanwhile, in another tie, Brazil will play China, who are missing world No. 5 Zheng Qinwen, after she withdrew to rest ahead of the Australian Open.
