Elena Rybakina Clinches Year-End World No. 1 Ranking After Tokyo Win

Posted : 29 October 2026

Elena Rybakina has secured the year-end world No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career after defeating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday. The victory guarantees that the 27-year-old will finish the 2026 season at the top of women's tennis.

Rybakina needed just 70 minutes to overcome the world No. 67, delivering a composed performance to advance to the quarter-finals. She controlled the match with an effective serve, recording six aces and saving the only break point she faced.

The Kazakh first rose to the top of the WTA rankings after winning the US Open in September, replacing Aryna Sabalenka. Her latest achievement confirms that she will remain at the summit when the new season begins in 2027.

Reflecting on the milestone, Rybakina described it as a major accomplishment for herself and her team. She acknowledged the strength of the competition on the women's tour and expressed hope that she could maintain her momentum into next season.

The ranking achievement caps an outstanding campaign in which Rybakina won the Australian Open and US Open, taking her Grand Slam tally to three. She also captured her fourth title of the season at the Ningbo Open in China last week, extending her winning streak to five matches.

Rybakina credited her serve for helping her through the encounter with Putintseva, explaining that the indoor conditions in Tokyo suited her game. She said staying focused and aggressive was important against an opponent known for changing the rhythm of rallies.

The Moscow-born star, who represents Kazakhstan internationally, has also secured qualification for the season-ending WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California. The tournament will bring together the leading players of the season as Rybakina looks to finish her successful year on another high.

Her next challenge in Tokyo will be a quarter-final meeting with Canada's Leylah Fernandez. The match will be a rematch of last week's Ningbo final, where Rybakina defeated Fernandez to claim the title. Fernandez booked her place in the last eight by beating Belgium's Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6.

Beyond tennis, Rybakina revealed that she has recently developed an interest in collecting Pokémon cards, a hobby encouraged by her coach. Although she admitted she was not a particularly devoted fan, she said she had started opening packs and looking for valuable cards with her team.

With the year-end No. 1 ranking secured, Rybakina has established herself as the leading player of the 2026 season. Her attention will now turn to the remainder of the Tokyo tournament and the WTA Finals, where she will have another opportunity to add to an already impressive year.
