Elena Rybakina Battles Past Coco Gauff to Set Up US Open Final Against Aryna Sabalenka

Elena Rybakina fought back from a set down to defeat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday and reach the US Open final, where she will face two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff made an impressive start at Arthur Ashe Stadium, breaking early to move 4-2 ahead before consolidating her advantage. The American continued to hold comfortably and closed out the opening set 6-3 to put Rybakina under pressure.

The Kazakh responded strongly in the second set, securing an early break and building a 4-1 advantage. Gauff fought back to level the set at 4-4, but a costly double fault in the 10th game handed Rybakina two set points. She converted her opportunity to force a deciding set.

The final set again saw Rybakina establish control, breaking to lead 5-3 and moving within one game of victory. Gauff immediately responded with a break of her own, but Rybakina refused to let the opportunity slip.

A sharp volley gave Rybakina two match points at 5-4, and Gauff then sent a forehand smash long to end her hopes of returning to the US Open final. Rybakina completed the comeback after a fiercely contested three-set battle.

Rybakina will now meet Sabalenka in Saturday's championship match. Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in the other semifinal and remains on course for a historic third consecutive US Open title.

The final will also feature a major ranking change, with Rybakina set to become the new world No. 1 regardless of the result in New York. She secured the top ranking by reaching the semifinals.

Looking ahead to the final, Rybakina admitted she will need to raise her level, particularly with her serve, against Sabalenka. The two-time Grand Slam champion will be seeking her first US Open crown after winning Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open earlier this year.

For Gauff, the defeat ended her hopes of reaching another US Open final after her 2023 championship run. Despite the setback, the American has enjoyed a strong hard-court season, including a title in Cincinnati and a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon.
