World No. 1 Elena Rybakina booked her place in the Ningbo Open quarterfinals on Thursday after making a strong return from injury. The defending champion was leading Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova 5-0 when her opponent, ranked 105th in the world, retired due to an injury. Rybakina will now meet Poland’s unseeded Katarzyna Kawa for a place in the semifinals.
The Kazakh star returned to competition after withdrawing from the Wuhan Open because of a foot problem. Earlier in the month, she had suffered a surprise second-round defeat at the China Open in Beijing. Rybakina’s recent achievements include winning the US Open in September and claiming the world No. 1 ranking, adding to her Grand Slam success.
Meanwhile, Alexandra Eala’s campaign in Ningbo ended in the round of 16 after she lost 7-5, 6-4 to Russia’s Diana Shnaider. The Russian, ranked 13th globally, advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face American teenager Iva Jovic.
Eala, who made history in August by becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA singles title, entered the match after a convincing straight-sets victory over France’s Diane Parry. However, Shnaider proved a tougher opponent, using her power and aggressive play to take the opening set after a closely contested battle.
The second set was more competitive as Eala tried to stay in contention. Shnaider applied sustained pressure on the Filipino player’s serve in the ninth game, secured a crucial break to lead 5-4, and then served out the match. The contest lasted one hour and 55 minutes.
Jovic also secured a quarterfinal place with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, a two-time Grand Slam finalist. The 18-year-old American will now face Shnaider as the Ningbo Open moves into its final stages.
