Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria Shine at 2025 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Lagos

Posted : 02 August 2025

Egypt, Tunisia, and Nigeria have continued their dominance at the ongoing 2025 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Lagos, as top seeds Wassim Essid from Tunisia and Mariam Younes from Egypt lived up to expectations by qualifying for the next round.

The eight-day event is taking place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Both top seeds remain unbeaten in all their matches — team and singles — showcasing remarkable consistency and dominance on the continental stage.

Essid, Africa’s top-ranked male youth player and the boys’ singles top seed, has not dropped a match since the tournament began. Despite Tunisia’s narrow 3-2 loss to Nigeria in the boys’ U-19 team final, the 17-year-old stood out with his aggressive and commanding playing style.

The defending boys’ U-19 singles champion had earlier declared his ambition to retain his title in Lagos, approaching each match with calculated focus — especially against tough opponents from Nigeria and Egypt.

Similarly, Mariam Younes, the girls’ singles top seed, has been a standout performer for the Egyptian team. Competing in her final youth tournament due to age limits, she led Egypt to a 3-0 team win over Nigeria.

Her calm leadership both on and off the table has inspired her teammates, and she remains determined to defend her singles crown.

With strong contenders from across the continent, the coming days will provide a real test for both Essid and Younes as they seek to retain their titles.
