Draper, Ruud Set for Madrid Open Final After Victories Over Musetti and Cerundolo

Posted : 03 May 2025

Jack Draper secured a place in the Madrid Open final after defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), on Friday. The Brit's composed performance earned him a second Masters 1000 final appearance this year, following his title win in Indian Wells.

Draper praised Musetti’s clay-court prowess after the match and admitted that the hard-fought victory meant a lot given the stage and the opponent. With this result, the 23-year-old is now 4-0 against Musetti and is projected to break into the world’s top five.

Casper Ruud also advanced to the final, overcoming Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 7-5 in a match that tested his physical and mental resilience. The Norwegian took a medical timeout early in the match due to chest and back discomfort but managed to push through and seal victory in one hour and 54 minutes.

Despite being disrupted by a hostile pro-Argentinian crowd and a disagreement with the chair umpire, Ruud's determination saw him save 15 of 18 break points and grind out the win. His decisive moment came when he converted his second match point in the twelfth game of the second set.

This will be Ruud’s third appearance in a Masters 1000 final, having fallen short in Monte Carlo earlier this year and in Miami in 2022. The 26-year-old is aiming to finally claim a title at this level, expressing hope that the third time proves lucky.

After the match, he said his back pain had been alleviated by his physiotherapist and expressed confidence that it wouldn’t affect his chances on Sunday. Reaching the final also marks a significant boost in the rankings for Ruud, who is set to return to the top ten.

The upcoming final promises a compelling battle between youth and experience. Draper spoke respectfully of Ruud’s achievements, acknowledging the challenge ahead and emphasizing the need to bring his best tennis.

The clash will pit Draper’s raw power and recent momentum against Ruud’s consistency and experience in big matches. Both players have battled adversity to reach this stage, setting the stage for a potentially memorable Madrid Open final.
