Jack Draper will continue his Indian Wells title defence with a last-16 clash against Novak Djokovic after a confident straight-sets victory over Argentina’s world number 20, Francisco Cerundolo, on Monday.
Draper, returning after an eight-month absence from the ATP Tour due to an arm injury, won 6-1 7-5, showcasing his growing confidence despite still being in the early stages of his comeback. Djokovic, the world number three and 24-time Grand Slam champion, overcame American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4 1-6 6-4 to keep his campaign on track.
British number two Cameron Norrie also made a strong statement by defeating sixth seed Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-4 to reach the fourth round. Norrie, the 27th seed, broke De Minaur three times and played with composure, setting up a meeting with Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata, who upset 10th seed Alexander Bublik in the previous round.
Draper reflected on his upcoming encounter with Djokovic, acknowledging the Serbian star’s mental and physical mastery of the game: “Anyone who knows tennis knows what he has done in the sport and what he is still doing is mind-blowing.”
World number one Carlos Alcaraz also progressed to the last 16 after surviving a tough challenge from Arthur Rinderknech. The Spaniard lost the first set in a tiebreak but came back to win 6-7(6) 6-3 6-2, despite struggling with a minor ankle issue in the second set.
Alcaraz will next face Casper Ruud, who beat 24th seed Valentin Vacherot 3-6 6-3 6-4, as the tournament continues to showcase high-quality tennis at Indian Wells.
