Dominic Thiem adapts training regimen to prevent wrist injuries, secures victory at Estoril Open

Posted : 02 April 2024

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem is strategically adjusting his training regimen in a bid to stave off persistent wrist injuries and regain momentum in the competitive tennis circuit. After enduring setbacks due to a troublesome wrist ailment in 2021, the 30-year-old former world No. 3 has faced challenges in returning to peak performance, witnessing a decline in his ranking during the intervening period.

Despite the hurdles, Thiem displayed resilience on Monday, securing his inaugural victory on the ATP Tour for the year 2024. His triumph over German player Maximilian Marterer in a closely contested match at the Estoril Open marked a significant step forward in his comeback journey.

Reflecting on his approach post-match, Thiem emphasized the importance of attentiveness to his body's signals. Acknowledging the necessity to prevent potential wrist issues from resurfacing, he disclosed a modification in the intensity of his training sessions while expressing confidence in his ability to adapt. He underlined his extensive experience in handling adjustments to his practice routine, affirming his readiness to navigate through this period with prudence.

Looking ahead to his upcoming match against seasoned competitor Richard Gasquet, Thiem conveyed optimism regarding his physical condition. Reassured by the absence of discomfort in his wrist during the previous encounter, he conveyed a cautious yet hopeful outlook, recognizing the need for continued vigilance in managing his well-being. Supported by an adept physiotherapist and the prospect of a rest day, Thiem remains poised for the challenges that lie ahead in his pursuit of tennis excellence.
