Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will start his 2025 season at the Brisbane International, where he will also seek his 11th Australian Open title. The 37-year-old Serbian tennis star, who aims to win a record 25th Grand Slam, had a challenging 2024, missing out on adding to his total, despite securing Olympic singles gold in Paris. The Brisbane International, which runs from December 29 to January 5, serves as a key preparation event for the Australian Open, which begins on January 12.
Djokovic expressed his excitement about returning to Pat Rafter Arena, highlighting the incredible support from Australian fans. He also mentioned that he intends to make the tournament memorable. If he wins, it would mark his 100th career title, making him just the third player in the Open era to reach this milestone, after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.
This follows a tough 2024, where Djokovic was defeated in the Australian Open semifinals by Jannik Sinner, leaving him tied with Margaret Court for the record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
In a new chapter of his career, Djokovic has enlisted long-time rival and now-retired Andy Murray as his coach in an effort to surpass Margaret Court's record at the Australian Open. This coaching partnership adds an interesting twist to Djokovic’s preparations as he aims to reclaim his dominance in Melbourne. Meanwhile, the Brisbane tournament will also mark the return of Australian Nick Kyrgios, who has struggled with injuries over the past two years.
The Brisbane International will feature a strong field, with other top male players like Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe, and Matteo Berrettini also beginning their year there. Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open women's champion and world number one, has announced she will play in Brisbane as well.
The tournament will also see the participation of Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Daria Kasatkina, and former champion Victoria Azarenka. Additionally, several players, including Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Alexander Zverev, will start their seasons at the United Cup in Sydney and Perth.
