Novak Djokovic advanced to the Athens ATP final on Friday with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, setting up a title clash with Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who edged Sebastian Korda 6-0, 5-7, 7-5. The Serbian took just 79 minutes to complete the win and will face a motivated Musetti, who needs victory in Saturday’s final to secure qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Djokovic, 38, snapped a four-match semifinal losing streak that stretched back to May, having fallen in the last four at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the US Open, and Shanghai. His last semifinal victory came at Geneva, where he went on to lift his 100th career title.
The world No. 1 broke Hanfmann twice to take control of the match and sealed the win in front of an energetic Athens crowd.
Meanwhile, Italy’s Jannik Sinner will begin his ATP Finals title defence on Sunday in Turin, looking to close out a season that saw him win two Grand Slam titles, including a memorable Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. Both Sinner and Alcaraz are tipped to qualify from their respective groups, raising the prospect of another high-stakes showdown between the world’s top two players.
Sinner’s season has also drawn controversy following a three-month ban over accidental contamination with a banned substance and his decision to skip Italy’s Davis Cup defence. Despite the criticism, the 24-year-old remains a national favourite and reaffirmed his pride this week.
As the ATP Finals approach, tension continues to grow between players and Grand Slam organisers over revenue sharing and welfare funding. Top men’s and women’s players have pushed for a greater share of tournament income and improved welfare provisions, but talks have stalled since the US Open. Women’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka recently criticised the lack of dialogue, while Sinner and Alcaraz, both player representatives, have so far remained tight-lipped on the issue.
