Djokovic clinches record-breaking seventh tour finals title, capping stellar 2023 season

Posted : 20 November 2023
In a triumphant finale to his remarkable 2023 season, Novak Djokovic secured his seventh title at the Tour Finals by defeating Italy's Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 in Turin. The victory established Djokovic as the tournament's record holder, capping off a year where he clinched three Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open.

The Serbian tennis maestro, who turned 36, celebrated the win by embracing his children, Stefan and Tara, in the stands, expressing gratitude for their support and calling them his "two angels."

Reflecting on his outstanding year, Djokovic acknowledged the challenges that come with age but credited his exceptional results to the support of his dedicated team. He also extended words of encouragement to Sinner, recognizing the young Italian's potential to become world No. 1 and win a Grand Slam.

Djokovic, ever appreciative of the Italian audience's passionate support, expressed the uniqueness of playing in Italy and thanked all those involved in the sport for their contributions.

Jannik Sinner, the first Italian to reach the final of the year-end tournament, graciously congratulated Djokovic, hailing him as an inspiration for both spectators and fellow athletes. Despite the loss, Sinner acknowledged the positives from the week and the season, expressing gratitude to his team for their hard work.

Djokovic's victory solidifies his year-end world No. 1 ranking and marks a historic accomplishment, with 400 weeks spent atop the ATP rankings, surpassing Roger Federer's previous record of 310 weeks.

In addition to his remarkable achievements in 2023, Djokovic's seventh Tour Finals title elevates him above Federer, who has six wins in the prestigious event. With 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic stands as the most successful player in tennis history.

While a loss to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon prevented him from achieving a calendar-year Grand Slam, Djokovic's unparalleled consistency was highlighted by reaching all Grand Slam finals and the year-end tournament final—a feat he last accomplished in 2015, reaffirming his status as one of the greatest players in the sport's history.
