Novak Djokovic secured his place in the US Open semi-finals with a gritty four-set victory over American Taylor Fritz, booking a much-anticipated showdown with Carlos Alcaraz.
The fourth seed overcame a hostile crowd and relentless pressure from Fritz to seal a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win after three hours and 24 minutes on court. Fritz had multiple chances to break Djokovic but failed to capitalize, leaving the Serb to rely on his trademark resilience to pull through.
Reflecting on the contest, Djokovic admitted he felt “lucky” at times, acknowledging Fritz’s strong play in the second and third sets. “It was an incredibly close match, really anybody’s match. I just tried to fight for every point,” he said.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, advanced in commanding style earlier in the day, defeating Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. The 22-year-old Spaniard dazzled with his powerful shot-making and trademark flair, telling reporters: “I’m here to entertain the crowd, myself, and my team.”
The semi-final marks another chapter in the growing rivalry between Djokovic and Alcaraz. The Spaniard has beaten Djokovic twice at Wimbledon finals, but the Serb triumphed in their most recent meetings, including last summer’s Olympic final.
With Djokovic chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles crown and Alcaraz seeking his second US Open title, their clash promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament.
Elsewhere, the remaining men’s quarter-finals feature Alex de Minaur against Felix Auger-Aliassime, and world number one Jannik Sinner facing fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
