Dimitrov edges past Zverev to reach Miami Open final against Sinner

Posted : 30 March 2024

Veteran Grigor Dimitrov's impressive journey at the Miami Open continued as he secured a spot in the final after defeating Alexander Zverev. The 32-year-old Bulgarian, who had previously defeated top seed Carlos Alcaraz, faced a tough battle against Zverev, ultimately triumphing in a three-set match.

Dimitrov's victory over Zverev propelled him into the Miami Open final, following his surprising win over Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. The Bulgarian veteran showcased his resilience once again, securing a hard-fought 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4 victory over the fourth seed Zverev.

In a closely contested encounter, Dimitrov clinched the first set after converting his first break point on set point, but narrowly lost the second set despite saving two set points in the decisive tie-breaker. Zverev, a five-time ATP 1000 titles winner, was aiming for his first final at this level since the 2022 Madrid Open, but Dimitrov's determined performance dashed those hopes.

Dimitrov described the match as a "dogfight," acknowledging the intensity of the competition between both players. He highlighted Zverev's strong performance throughout the match but credited his own authority and precise shot-making in securing the win.

Having already claimed the Brisbane International title earlier in the season, Dimitrov now sets his sights on the Miami Open final against Jannik Sinner. He aims to capture his first ATP 1000 title since his victory at the 2017 Cincinnati Open.

The match between Dimitrov and Zverev saw both players showcasing dominance on serve in the opening games of the first set. Despite a thrilling 32-shot rally in favor of Zverev, Dimitrov held firm and capitalized on break point opportunities to claim the opening set.

While the second set remained closely contested, Zverev managed to secure the tiebreak, setting up a decisive third set. Dimitrov displayed resilience, saving a break point before securing a crucial break of his own to edge ahead 4-3, eventually sealing victory with a love-hold.

Dimitrov's triumph also marks his return to the top 10 of the ATP rankings, reflecting his perseverance and dedication to his craft. He attributes his success to the hard work and belief in himself, emphasizing the significance of his journey and the challenges overcome along the way.
