Diana Shnaider Applauds Maja Chwalinska After Historic Roland Garros Semi Final Upset

Posted : 05 June 2026

The women's draw at Roland Garros witnessed an unprecedented piece of tennis history on the clay courts of Paris. World number 114 Maja Chwalinska secured a stunning straight-sets victory over 25th seed Diana Shnaider. The grueling semi-final battle lasted nearly two hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The historic 7-6, 6-4 result makes the Polish competitor the first qualifier in the Open Era to reach the French Open singles final.

The opening set was a highly physical baseline war that tested the endurance of both athletes. Chwalinska broke early to build an advantage, but her Russian opponent instantly broke back to level the score line. Shnaider pushed aggressively during a marathon service game at 4-4 and later generated a 3-1 lead in the tie-break. However, the resilient qualifier claimed six of the next seven points to secure the opening set.

Shnaider continued to fight hard in the second set despite struggling with visible physical discomfort. The 22-year-old requested a medical timeout to treat an ailment, yet she still managed to briefly lead 2-1. Chwalinska remained entirely unbothered by the disruption and broke serve at 5-4 to seal her ninth consecutive victory of the fortnight.

Shnaider offered a detailed technical breakdown of her opponent's unique playing style during her post-match press conference. She noted that Chwalinska moves incredibly well and places the ball into highly uncomfortable positions on the court. The Russian added that the left-handed forehand and heavy backhand slices are perfectly suited for clay. Shnaider admitted that it felt incredibly difficult to finish points because the Pole kept extending the rallies from neutral positions.

Despite missing out on her maiden Grand Slam final appearance, Shnaider maintained a positive perspective regarding her two-week campaign. She expressed immense pride in how she competed and fought for every point throughout the tournament. Chwalinska will now face eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in the championship match on Saturday after the teenage sensation dismantled Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3.
