Defending Champion Andrey Rublev falls to Alexei Popyrin in Monte Carlo Masters opener, Jannik Sinner advances

Posted : 11 April 2024

Andrey Rublev, the defending champion at the Monte Carlo Masters, faced a disappointing early exit as he succumbed to a straight-sets defeat against Australian Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday. Popyrin displayed dominance throughout the match, clinching a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the second round of this traditional clay court tournament, which serves as a precursor to the French Open.

Expressing his satisfaction with his performance, Popyrin shared his comfort on the clay surface, citing his previous ATP title win on clay in Croatia in 2023. He expressed joy in defeating a formidable opponent in Rublev, who was both in form and held the defending champion title, marking their encounter as an "awesome match."

For Rublev, the loss continued a series of disappointing results, following defeats in his previous matches in Miami and Indian Wells. Despite a chance to level the second set at 5-5, Rublev faltered, ultimately conceding victory to Popyrin, who capitalized on the opportunity to close out the match.

In contrast to Rublev's early exit, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner cruised through his match, dispatching American Sebastian Korda with ease in a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Sinner's formidable performance included converting seven of the 12 break points he created while confidently saving all three faced, setting the stage for his next match against Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in the last 16.
