Davis Cup World Group II Playoff: Nigeria Face Uphill Task After Morocco Sweep Opening Singles

Nigeria face a difficult task in their Davis Cup World Group II playoff against Morocco after losing both singles rubbers on the opening day in Rabat.

Canice Abua was first beaten by Morocco’s Bennani Karim 6-1, 6-2 before Abubakar Yusuf suffered an identical defeat to Dlimi Yassine in the second singles rubber.

The results gave Morocco a 2-0 lead in the tie and strengthened their advantage in the head-to-head record against Nigeria, with the North Africans now leading 4-0.

The Nigerian team, known as the Green Aces, will need a strong response when action resumes with the doubles and reverse singles.

Nigeria are still searching for their first victory over Morocco in more than five decades, making the remaining matches particularly significant for the West African side.

The doubles rubber offers Nigeria an opportunity to reduce the deficit and revive their hopes of turning the tie around before the reverse singles.

The overall tie carries significant implications, with the winner securing promotion to the 2027 Davis Cup World Group I, while the losing nation will remain in World Group II.

Nigeria will therefore need to win the remaining fixtures to keep their promotion hopes alive.
