Daniil Medvedev withdraws from Qatar Open due to foot injury

Posted : 16 February 2024

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has confirmed his withdrawal from the Qatar Open, citing an ongoing foot injury and a lack of full fitness. This decision comes after he also pulled out of the ongoing event in Rotterdam.

Medvedev, the former world No. 1, has not played since his loss to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final last month. Expressing regret, the 2021 US Open champion stated, "Unfortunately, I am not able to defend my title in Doha this year. I am still not 100 per cent ready to compete."

Medvedev expressed his apologies to the tournament organizers, fans, and sponsors, emphasizing his fondness for playing in Doha. Despite being unable to defend his title, he looks forward to returning in the future. Last year, Medvedev secured victory in the Qatar Open by defeating Andy Murray in the final. His absence from the upcoming tournament adds to the list of high-profile players skipping the event.

In addition to Medvedev, Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal has also withdrawn from the ATP 250 tournament in Doha, scheduled from February 19-24.

Nadal, a 22-times Grand Slam champion, continues to grapple with injury issues, leading to his decision to skip the competition. The absence of these top players adds intrigue to the Qatar Open, as other contenders aim to capitalize on the opportunity.
