Daniil Medvedev looks to enhance claycourt skills with Gilles Simon's guidance

Posted : 24 April 2024

Daniil Medvedev is optimistic about his prospects on clay with the addition of Gilles Simon to his coaching team, aiming to bolster his understanding of the surface ahead of the French Open next month. Despite his dominance on hardcourts, where he has clinched 19 of his 20 titles, Medvedev's record on clay has been comparatively modest, with his lone claycourt trophy coming at the 2023 Rome Masters.

The world No. 4, who suffered an early exit in Monte Carlo earlier this month, acknowledges the need for improvement on clay and believes Simon's expertise, with five tour-level trophies on clay, can provide valuable insights into his game. Medvedev highlights Simon's ability to translate theoretical concepts into actionable strategies on the court, enabling him to make more informed decisions during matches without overthinking.

Medvedev emphasizes the importance of balancing strategic adjustments learned from Simon with instinctive play during matches. Reflecting on his experience in Monte Carlo, he acknowledges the challenge of striking the right balance between strategic thinking and spontaneous reactions during matches. However, he remains optimistic about the progress made under Simon's guidance and looks forward to further refining his game as he embarks on his Madrid Open campaign.
