Dan Evans Stuns Tiafoe at Queen’s as Norrie Exits Early

Posted : 17 June 2025

Dan Evans produced one of the standout performances of his career by upsetting world number 13 Frances Tiafoe in straight sets at the Queen’s Club Championships. The 34-year-old Brit triumphed 7-5, 6-2, securing his first win against a top-20 player since overcoming Alex de Minaur at the 2023 Davis Cup.

This also marked only his second career victory over a top-20 opponent on grass, his last being at Wimbledon in 2018. The result propels Evans into the last 16, reigniting his grass-court credentials in front of a home crowd.

In contrast, it was a disappointing day for fellow Briton Cameron Norrie, who fell in the opening round. Norrie, the 2021 Queen’s finalist, lost to 19-year-old Czech sensation Jakub Mensik in a three-set battle that ended 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-1.

The teenager’s win in the scorching London heat makes him just the second teenager in the past decade to win a main draw match at Queen’s, following in the footsteps of Jack Draper. Norrie’s early exit is a setback ahead of Wimbledon, where he had hoped to build momentum.

Elsewhere, British number two Jacob Fearnley also impressed, comfortably dispatching Australia’s Alex Bolt with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The 22-year-old’s confident performance on grass sets him up for a potentially challenging second-round tie against third seed Taylor Fritz, should the American advance past Corentin Moutet. Fearnley’s run highlights the depth in British men’s tennis, particularly on home soil during the grass-court season.

Looking ahead, Evans will face either Brandon Nakashima of the United States or France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his next match. Mensik, riding high from his breakthrough win, is set to take on veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the quarter-finals.

With several British players still in the draw and young talents making waves, the Queen’s Club Championships are shaping up to deliver more surprises as the tournament progresses.
