Dan Evans secured a win over fellow Briton Billy Harris in the first round of the French Open qualifying, edging closer to the tournament’s main draw. Despite trailing 5-2 early in the first set, the 34-year-old rallied to claim the set 7-5 and followed it with a 6-3 victory in the second.
Evans, currently ranked 215th, is aiming to climb back into the top 100 after a dip in form that has seen him mostly compete on the ATP Challenger Tour. His next opponent will be French wildcard Clement Tabur, with potential opponents including Romania’s Filip Cristian Jianu or Germany’s Henri Squire.
On the women’s side, Fran Jones also advanced to the second qualifying round by defeating Croatia’s Lea Boskovic 6-2, 6-3, setting up a clash against Japan’s Mai Hontama. However, Heather Watson’s bid for an 11th appearance at Roland Garros came to an end after she lost 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to Australian Daria Saville.
Watson, ranked slightly higher than Saville, fought hard in a tightly contested first set that included a controversial time violation, but ultimately Saville dominated the tie-break and maintained momentum to close out the match.
Evans’ comeback in his match was notable as he overcame an early deficit and capitalized on Harris’ errors to turn the tide in his favor. Despite a career peak of world number 21 less than two years ago, the veteran player now faces the challenge of proving himself again in the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Watson’s defeat was marked by intense moments on court, including a dispute over a time violation, but Saville’s consistent play ensured her progression. Jones, meanwhile, showed resilience in closing out her match despite a brief lapse in serve.
The French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, begins this Sunday. Several British players, including Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu, and Sonay Kartal, are already in the women’s main draw, while Jack Draper, Jacob Fearnley, and Cameron Norrie will compete in the men’s tournament.
Raducanu, currently competing at the Strasbourg Open, will face Danielle Collins next, with a quarter-final showdown likely against top seed Jessica Pegula or Anna Kalinskaya.
