Cristina Bucsa Helps Spain Reach Billie Jean King Cup Semifinals

Posted : 24 September 2026

Cristina Bucsa bounced back from a singles defeat to help Spain defeat Kazakhstan 2-1 and reach the Billie Jean King Cup semifinals for the first time since 2008. The decisive victory came in the doubles match in Shenzhen on Wednesday.

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro gave Spain the perfect start, beating Sonja Zhiyenbayeva 6-2, 6-2 to put her team ahead. The Spaniard controlled the match throughout and secured the opening point in just 62 minutes.

Kazakhstan responded through Yulia Putintseva, who defeated Bucsa 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to level the quarter-final. The victory was Putintseva's 28th in Billie Jean King Cup matches, matching Galina Voskoboeva's record for the most wins by a Kazakh player in the competition.

Bucsa had little time to recover before returning to the court for the decisive doubles contest alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo. The pair produced a resilient performance to beat Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva 6-2, 7-5 and secure Spain's place in the last four.

The Spanish duo had to withstand sustained pressure from their opponents, saving 18 of the 20 break points they faced. The second set was particularly demanding, with Kazakhstan creating numerous opportunities before Spain eventually closed out the match.

Bucsa had arrived in Shenzhen after competing in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she reached the singles semifinals and won the doubles title. Despite the demanding schedule and her singles loss earlier in the day, she returned to deliver the decisive result for Spain.

Spain captain Carla Suarez Navarro praised the team's fighting spirit after the victory and stressed that the tournament was not over. Spain will face Czechia in Friday's semifinal, with the Czech team having beaten Great Britain 2-0 in their quarter-final.

Spain's return to the semifinals marks its first appearance at this stage of the Billie Jean King Cup since 2008. The five-time champions will now attempt to advance to the final and continue their pursuit of a first title since 1998.
