Coco Gauff Survives Match Point Scare to Reach Italian Open Quarterfinals in Rome

Posted : 11 May 2026

Coco Gauff produced a resilient comeback at the Italian Open, saving a match point before defeating American teenager Iva Jovic in a thrilling fourth-round encounter. The reigning French Open champion eventually won 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 after a demanding contest in Rome.

The world No. 4 had been on the brink of defeat while trailing 7-5, 5-3, but managed to turn the match around under pressure. Gauff, who also came from a set down in her previous round, once again showed strong fighting spirit to stay alive in the tournament.

Despite the victory, Gauff admitted she will need to significantly improve her level ahead of tougher challenges, especially as she builds toward her French Open title defence starting later this month. Her performance against Jovic was inconsistent, with unforced errors and struggles in footwork affecting her rhythm.

The match was further complicated by windy conditions at the Foro Italico, along with external distractions, including the noise of fighter jets overhead. Jovic also appeared affected after sustaining a finger injury during the match, which disrupted her grip and consistency.

Gauff capitalised on her opponent’s dip in performance, gradually regaining control of the match. Although she was not at her sharpest, she focused on keeping the ball in play and forcing errors from the young American.

The victory sets up a quarterfinal meeting with rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva, where Gauff will need a far more polished performance to continue her run in Rome.
