Coco Gauff’s Revamped Serve Powers Strong US Open Start

Posted : 02 September 2026

Coco Gauff has returned to the US Open with a transformed serve, a year after her struggles with the shot became one of the defining stories of her campaign.

The fourth-seeded American produced a composed performance to defeat Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-4 in the first round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gauff’s serving was particularly impressive, helping her withstand a difficult spell in the second set and advance in straight sets.

A year ago, Gauff was battling severe confidence issues with her serve and even spent time practising in the rain as she tried to correct the problem. She responded by bringing biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan into her coaching team, following a difficult period that included a high number of double faults.

The changes did not produce instant results, but Gauff now feels the work is beginning to pay off. Her serve played a crucial role in her recent Cincinnati Open triumph, and she arrived in New York with considerably more confidence in her ability to rely on the shot.

Against Sonmez, Gauff opened the match with an ace and quickly established control. She won 13 of 14 first-serve points in the opening set and finished with five aces, while also saving four of five break points.

The biggest test came in the second set when Sonmez threatened to turn the match around. Gauff faced three break points while trailing 3-2 but held her nerve before breaking the Turkish player in the following game to regain control.

Gauff then served out the contest confidently, closing with another strong service game to complete her victory in one hour and 20 minutes. The performance highlighted how much her confidence has changed since last year's tournament.

The 22-year-old still wants to improve her serve, but she now approaches the shot with a different mindset. Instead of simply hoping to get the ball into play, Gauff believes she can use her serve aggressively to earn free points and put opponents under immediate pressure.

Gauff will next face either Paula Badosa or Daria Kasatkina as she continues her bid for a second US Open title.
