Coco Gauff has shifted her mindset ahead of the French Open, insisting she no longer carries the mental burden of being a defending champion. The American believes each season presents a fresh opportunity rather than a title to protect.
The world No. 4, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka in last year’s Roland Garros final, says she learned from her difficult title defence attempt at the 2024 US Open, where she exited early in the fourth round. She now views major tournaments as new challenges rather than obligations to repeat past success.
Gauff also remains a strong contender in Paris, especially with Iga Swiatek no longer as dominant on clay and Sabalenka facing fitness concerns. Despite losing the Italian Open final to Elina Svitolina, she has shown encouraging signs in her game, particularly with her serve.
The 21-year-old has struggled with double faults in recent seasons but has worked closely with biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan to improve consistency. While she is still refining her delivery, Gauff believes her second serve is becoming more stable and effective.
With growing confidence and a more relaxed mindset, Gauff believes she is better prepared for another deep run in Paris as she targets a third Grand Slam title, echoing legends like Rafael Nadal in her long-term ambitions.
