Coco Gauff Overcomes Paula Badosa to Reach US Open Third Round

Coco Gauff continued her pursuit of a second US Open title by defeating Paula Badosa 6-4, 7-6(5) in the second round at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday. The fourth-seeded American secured victory in around two hours to reach the third round in New York for the fifth consecutive year.

The victory was particularly significant for Gauff given her recent record against Badosa. The Spaniard had won their previous two meetings and entered the contest with a 5-3 advantage in their career head-to-head. Gauff, however, produced a composed display when it mattered most to end that losing streak.

Gauff established control in the opening set by earning the first break at 3-3 after Badosa’s attempted drop shot failed to clear the net. The American then protected her advantage with two confident service games to take the set 6-4.

The second set proved much tighter. Gauff moved ahead early after another unsuccessful drop shot from Badosa, but the former world No. 2 responded by breaking back and levelling at 4-4. Badosa subsequently saved three break points before taking a 5-4 lead, forcing Gauff to find another gear.

The American held firm to force a tiebreak, where she eventually closed out the match 7-5 on her second match point after Badosa sent a backhand beyond the baseline. Gauff said the result gave her confidence, particularly because she managed to defeat a difficult opponent without needing a deciding set.

Gauff has also shown considerable improvement in her serving and ability to handle pressure during her recent run. Against Badosa, she won 71% of points behind her first serve and 57% on her second serve, while being broken only twice.

The 22-year-old will next meet Cristina Bucsa for a place in the fourth round. The Spaniard reached the third round after surviving a marathon contest against Himeno Sakatsume, winning 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. It will be only the second career meeting between Gauff and Bucsa, with the American winning their first encounter at Indian Wells in 2023.

Gauff arrived in New York in strong form and has now won 16 consecutive sets since the opening set of her first-round match in Cincinnati. She is aiming to add another US Open championship to the title she captured in 2023.
