Coco Gauff Dominates Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 to Reach Madrid Open Final

Posted : 02 May 2025

Iga Swiatek's bid to defend her Madrid Open title came to a crushing halt as she was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Coco Gauff in the semifinals on Thursday. Swiatek, the reigning champion and five-time Grand Slam winner, struggled with her serve, dropping it five times during the 64-minute match.

Despite her usual dominance on clay, Swiatek's performance in Madrid has been below par, with earlier losses in sets to Alexandra Eala and Diana Shnaider, along with a swift defeat to Madison Keys.

Gauff, who had never beaten Swiatek on clay until this match, showcased a dominant performance, breaking Swiatek's serve three times in the first set and twice more in the second. The American hit seven aces compared to Swiatek's one and looked in control throughout the encounter.

Reflecting on her loss, Swiatek admitted her level was off, stating that Gauff played well, but she felt her own movement and mindset were not up to par.

The defeat marks another challenging stretch for Swiatek, with only the upcoming Italian Open before she defends her French Open title later this month.

Her last trophy came at Roland Garros in 2024, and this latest loss leaves her with little time to regain form. Swiatek acknowledged the mental pressure she felt, admitting she tried too hard to force the game, which ultimately led to her collapse on court.

On the other side of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka secured her place in the final after overcoming Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-5. Sabalenka, who won the Madrid Open in 2021 and 2023, fought off a late challenge from Svitolina to claim her fourth final appearance in five years. Sabalenka’s victory ensures she remains the first WTA player to reach 30 match wins this season, continuing her strong form as she heads into the final against Gauff.
